Recycle/Reuse - Important Colon Function
by Katie Murphy

The colon or large intestine is usually known for its elimination function or the organ that is responsible for bowel movements. However, the colon is the body’s recycling center processing nearly 50% of the body’s fluids. Without the colon’s efficient recycling function the body would be extremely stressed to reproduce and replace these fluids.

As food enters the stomach it is broken down into a liquid form called chyme and enters the small intestine where additional digestive fluids mainly from the liver and pancreas mix with it. As the chyme passes through the colon valuable digestive enzymes, electrolytes, amino acids and liver bile is absorbed that would be lost with elimination.

Water, which comprises over 72% of the body’s mass, is extracted by the colon and reused. If a person suffers chronic diarrhea or constipation they may become seriously dehydrated because the colon can not perform this extremely important water recycling process. Even though one might drink lots of water, it is still essential for the body that the colon is able to recycle.

Colons that eliminate slowly with irregular or small bowel movements can become dehydrated. The cells making up the colon wall become dry from stagnant bowel movements and no longer allow fluids to flow through this tissue. This affects the ability to recycle fluids, absorb nutrients, and allow for blood and lymph system toxins to release into the colon.

The production and absorption of B vitamins and vitamin K are directly related to intestinal function and health. Minerals are both needed and absorbed by the colon.  Bacteria and virus infections often start first in the intestines. The body’s immune system defense starts with the digestion process which is designed to destroy and eliminate harmful parasitic invaders.

It is true our bodies are naturally made to protect us against disease, efficiently recycle and reuse body fluids, and eliminate waste by-products along with unused food stuff. But in today’s world, we are seriously stressing the body’s ability to naturally detox by over-exposure to air pollutants, food preservatives, petrochemicals in our skin care products, prescription drugs, heavy metals like mercury in teeth fillings, and so on. Some of these ingredients are man-made chemicals that have never before existed on earth and our bodies are not able to process them.

When people ask me, “Why did you choose to do Colonics?”, I answer, “All detox drinks, herbs, tinctures, etc. and even other therapies do not hydrate the body and in fact require additional consumption of water beyond the normal daily requirements. Along with its other benefits, a Colonic directly hydrates the colon tissue providing such a powerful influence on overall body health and a valuable support for all other health programs.”
